Senior Air Conditioning Service & Breakdown Engineer

The role

Air Con Services is looking for an experienced Senior Air Conditioning Service and Breakdown Engineer to join our engineering team.

This is a permanent Monday-to-Friday position with no standby rota, no evening call-outs and no weekend working. Reactive breakdowns are attended during normal weekday working hours, allowing you to build a senior engineering career without giving up your evenings and weekends.

The role focuses on commercial and industrial air-conditioning systems across Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire. We need an engineer with strong technical knowledge who can independently diagnose difficult faults and complete high-quality repairs.

Established in 2012, Air Con Services provides commercial air-conditioning installation, servicing, maintenance and repair services from its base in Duncote, Northamptonshire.

We work with commercial and industrial customers ranging from individual premises to multi-site organisations. Our focus is completing work properly, providing accurate technical information and building long-term customer relationships.

Main responsibilities

• Attend commercial air-conditioning breakdowns during normal weekday working hours.
• Diagnose electrical, mechanical, refrigerant-circuit, controls and system-performance faults.
• Carry out planned preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
• Service, maintain and repair split, multi-split and VRV/VRF air-conditioning systems.
• Use manufacturer fault codes, technical manuals, service software and operating data to identify root causes.
• Test components and circuits safely using appropriate electrical and refrigeration test equipment.
• Recover, charge and handle refrigerants in accordance with current F-Gas requirements.
• Identify refrigerant leaks and determine appropriate repair solutions.
• Commission repaired or replacement equipment and confirm correct system operation.
• Produce electronic job reports containing readings, findings, photographs, parts information and remedial recommendations.
• Supply the office with enough technical information to accurately price follow-on repairs.
• Liaise professionally with customers, facilities managers, site representatives and the office team.
• Maintain the company vehicle, tools, equipment and van stock in a clean and organised condition.
• Complete all work safely and in accordance with company procedures, manufacturer guidance and current legislation.

Systems and equipment

• Split and multi-split air-conditioning systems.
• VRV and VRF systems.
• Air-handling units and DX coils.
• Centralised and local air-conditioning controls.
• Compressors, fan motors, electrical components and printed circuit boards.
• Refrigerant and electrical control circuits.

Essential qualifications and experience

• Valid F-Gas Category 1 certification.
• Strong independent fault-finding and diagnostic ability.
• Experience working on split, multi-split and VRV/VRF equipment.
• A sound understanding of refrigeration principles and refrigerant-system operation.
• Competence in electrical testing and interpreting wiring diagrams.
• The ability to distinguish between component failure, controls faults, installation defects and wider system-design issues.
• The ability to complete accurate written and electronic reports.
• Good customer-service and communication skills.
• A full UK driving licence.
• The right to work in the United Kingdom.

• £48,000–£55,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Working area and hours

The position is based from Duncote, near Towcester, with work primarily covering Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire. Some travel outside the core area may occasionally be required for established customers and multi-site contracts.

The normal working week is Monday to Friday on a 42.5-hour contract. Normal hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. There is no out-of-hours standby or call-out rota; breakdown work is scheduled during normal weekday hours.

Travel arrangements and any applicable overtime provisions will be confirmed within the employment offer.
